It’s A Woman’s World

It’s no secret that the world we live in today would not be possible without women. Women are mothers, daughters and teachers, as well as lawyers, doctors and leaders. It is just as important to acknowledge women during March, which is Women’s History Month, as it is every other day of the year. Make celebrating women a year long event!

Just a few months back, I turned 21. Being 21 is funny because it really makes you think, wow I’m an adult. What other birthdays do I have to look forward to? I guess turning 26 is when I’ll get kicked off my parent’s insurance but that’s not exactly a celebration in my book. Anyways, turning 21 has really allowed me to reflect on who I am and how I want others to perceive me. Suddenly, I find more confidence in being a woman than I ever have before.

I feel like being a woman can be challenging at times, especially when attempting to enter a predominantly male dominated field, such as sports broadcasting. However, it has also come to my attention that nearly every field I can think of is male dominated. It doesn’t discourage me. It makes me even more proud of who I am, and the woman I hope to be.

Emily Giangreco, KVUE sports reporter once told me that women in sports should support all other women in sports. I think this message should apply to just everyone, everywhere. Women should support women. Men should support women. Everyone should support everyone in an attempt to improve the morale of the world around us.

As a society, we struggle to believe that something is real or possible if there isn’t proof. In order for little girls to grow up with dreams of becoming the president, engineers or mathematicians, they need to see other women being that. The same logic applies to diversity. If people don’t see someone who looks like them or can relate to them living out their dreams, they won’t know if it’s possible.

Women are amazing and capable of anything that they can set their mind to. We need to instill that message in women and girls all around the globe. Happy Women’s History Month! Let’s keep making history.
